논문 B(Continuous-time quantum error correction)는 이 접근을 정식화한다.

Molecular Dynamics of Radiation- and Heavy-Metal-Resistant Proteins
The greatest barrier to sending microorganisms to Mars is neither the cold nor the dryness. It is the relentless bombardment of radiation. And if that radiation is daunting, there is something even more daunting: designing a repair circuit without knowing when to activate it, or how strongly.
The Bottleneck: A Problem of Control Precision
The DNA repair mechanisms of radiation-resistant microorganisms such as Deinococcus radiodurans have been studied for decades. The difficulty arises when one attempts to redesign these mechanisms through synthetic biology. Unlike on Earth, Martian radiation acts as a continuous background noise of cumulative damage. If the repair circuit activates too early, energy is wasted; if it activates too late, irreversible mutations accumulate. Neither overreaction nor underreaction is acceptable. Synthetic biology has the tools to build circuit components, yet the field has lacked a mathematical framework capable of systematically answering which combination of parameters is optimal when the noise environment changes.
The Key: A Wall That Quantum Error Correction Already Broke Through
In the entirely separate field of quantum computing, a structurally identical wall was erected first, and demolished first.
Quantum information is extraordinarily vulnerable to external noise. Measuring a system collapses the information it carries; not measuring it leaves errors undetected. The approach developed to resolve this dilemma is continuous-time quantum error correction (CTQEC). Paper B (Continuous-time quantum error correction) formalizes this approach around two core ideas.
First, weak measurement: partial information is extracted continuously without fully collapsing the system. Second, continuous feedback: corrective operations are applied in real time based on that partial information. This process is formalized through the Lindblad master equation and filtering theory. The paper analyzes how the optimal feedback strategy differs depending on whether the noise is Markovian (simple and memoryless) or non-Markovian (complex, with memory). The information to be protected is confined within a specific subsystem of Hilbert space, and the feedback continuously stabilizes that subsystem, this is the essential structure.
The essence of this framework is as follows: a mathematical design tool that simultaneously optimizes measurement strength and feedback intensity to match the statistical properties of the noise. If a problem is structurally identical, this tool can be adopted wholesale, regardless of whether quantum information is involved.
The Transplant: Overlaying the CTQEC Framework onto the SOS Response
The SOS response in Escherichia coli is already a feedback loop. According to Paper A (The SOS system), the SOS response is a global regulatory network featuring sophisticated multilayered control that includes transcriptional derepression, post-translational activation, and repression. The RecA protein senses damaged DNA and becomes activated, promoting the cleavage of the LexA repressor protein and thereby inducing the expression of repair genes. Once repair is complete, repression is restored. Detection, signaling, repair, return to repression, the structure itself bears a striking resemblance to the weak measurement, feedback, and system stabilization of CTQEC.
The transplant proposed here is as follows: by reverse-engineering the Lindblad and filtering mathematics of CTQEC onto SOS dynamics, one could systematically map out a design space for quantitatively and optimally tuning parameters, such as the RecA activation threshold, the LexA cleavage rate, and the rate of repression restoration after repair completion, as functions of the Martian radiation dose rate (noise spectrum).
The reason this connection has remained non-obvious until now is simple. Quantum information theorists do not design DNA repair circuits, and synthetic biologists do not work with the Lindblad equation. The two communities have been operating on the same mathematical structure without ever sharing each other's language.
Impact: What Could Change
If this framework were realized, microbial circuits tailored to the Martian radiation environment could be built not through trial and error, but through a quantitative design pipeline that takes a noise spectrum as its input. It may become possible to systematically derive repair circuits with distinct optimal parameters for the Martian day-night cycle, where radiation intensity varies, and for solar storm events. The very starting point of synthetic biology design could shift.
