(Efficient photocatalytic nitrogen fixation from air under sunlight via iron-doped WO₃, arXiv:2209.08547).
(Rhizosphere Microorganisms Supply Availability of Soil Nutrients and Induce Plant Defense)은 다른 각도에서 중요한 그림을 보여준다.

English Version
Biological Nitrogen Fixation and Elemental Cycling
If you want to grow food on Mars, the first problem to solve is not the soil. It is nitrogen. Plants require nitrogen to synthesize proteins, yet the nitrogen present in the Martian atmosphere as N₂ is locked in a form that living organisms cannot use directly, just as on Earth.
The Bottleneck: Nitrogen Is There, but Inaccessible
Nitrogen makes up roughly 2.6% of the Martian atmosphere. The low concentration is one challenge, but the deeper problem is the triple bond of N₂, N≡N, which is so strong that breaking it demands enormous energy, whether by biological or mechanical means. On Earth, the Haber-Bosch process forces this bond apart under high temperature and pressure to produce ammonia (NH₃), but that process presupposes a large-scale power infrastructure. Running such equipment in a self-sustaining Martian ecosystem is not realistic. Biological nitrogen-fixing microorganisms such as Rhizobium do exist, but they only drive the cycle effectively once some reactive nitrogen compounds are already present in the environment. In other words, without an initial supply of reactive nitrogen to prime the system, the biological cycle cannot start at all.
The Key: A Low-Energy Pathway Opened by Iron Doping
This is where a paper from an entirely different field, photocatalytic chemistry, becomes compelling. A research team in China developed an Fe-doped WO₃ photocatalyst capable of converting atmospheric N₂ directly into ammonia using only sunlight (Efficient photocatalytic nitrogen fixation from air under sunlight via iron-doped WO₃, arXiv:2209.08547).
The significance is not simply that the process runs on solar energy. When iron (Fe) is doped into WO₃, intermediate energy levels are introduced and oxygen vacancies form within the photocatalyst structure. This configuration creates a new low-energy activation pathway in which photogenerated electrons are transferred more efficiently to directly weaken the N≡N triple bond. According to the abstract, photocatalytic efficiency is improved roughly 4-fold compared with pure WO₃, and under optimal conditions nitrogen fixation performance reached 477 μg·g_cat⁻¹·h⁻¹. The process operates at ambient pressure under sunlight, requiring none of the high-temperature, high-pressure infrastructure that Haber-Bosch demands.
A review paper on rhizosphere microbial networks (Rhizosphere Microorganisms Supply Availability of Soil Nutrients and Induce Plant Defense) adds an important perspective from a different angle. The microorganisms living around plant roots, including nitrogen-fixing bacteria, organic matter decomposers, and plant-symbiotic fungi, divide their roles to cycle nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other elements repeatedly between organic and inorganic forms. This network demonstrates its full value when reactive nutrients are supplied to it on a sustained basis.
The Bridge: Photocatalysis Primes the System, Microorganisms Complete the Cycle
The two studies emerged from separate research communities. The photocatalyst researchers aimed to replace synthetic fertilizer production, while the rhizosphere researchers were concerned with the sustainability of terrestrial agriculture. Connecting the two within the context of Mars remains a proposal at this stage.
The structural logic of that connection is nevertheless clear. If Fe-doped WO₃ could use sunlight to generate initial NH₃ and NO₃⁻ from the thin Martian atmosphere, those reactive nitrogen compounds could serve as priming fuel for the rhizosphere microbial network. From that point, the microorganisms take over: nitrogen-fixing bacteria convert reactive nitrogen into organic nitrogen, decomposers remineralize it, and symbiotic microorganisms deliver it to plants. A loop capable of running without further external input may then be established. The photocatalyst replaces the priming energy of the nitrogen cycle with solar power, and the microbial network ensures that nitrogen is not lost but cycled repeatedly within a closed system.
Impact: The Conditions for a Closed Ecosystem Change
If this two-stage architecture could be demonstrated to work in practice, the foundational assumptions of Martian habitat ecosystem design may shift. A pathway could open for closing the elemental cycle using only local resources, without transporting nitrogen fertilizer from Earth or depending on large-scale electrical infrastructure. The feasibility of a self-sustaining food production system would look different as a result.
