Social Safety Theory

Early Diagnosis of Social Collapse Thresholds via Complex-Systems Emulation
When it comes to sending humans to Mars, the third hardest problem after rockets and oxygen is, in fact, people themselves. If dozens of individuals must live together in a sealed environment for decades, what breaks first is not the technology but human relationships and psychology. Yet we still do not know which conditions trigger that collapse.
Bottleneck: Too Many Variables to Know Where the System Breaks
The central challenge in designing a closed Mars community is not simply that stress is harmful. Dozens of socio-environmental variables are intricately intertwined: spatial layout, role allocation, frequency of rituals and ceremonies, communication cycles with Earth, and the structure of generational turnover. There is currently no method to identify in advance which combination of these factors constitutes the critical threshold that destabilizes group cohesion. Approaches to date have relied on a small number of isolation experiments, such as Antarctic stations and the International Space Station, or on intuitive design principles. These explore only a tiny fraction of a high-dimensional space, and the evidence base is far too thin to apply directly to a long-duration, Mars-scale closed community.
Key Insight: Two Entirely Different Fields Already Understand the Same Structural Wall
Social Safety Reshapes the Body
Social Safety Theory (Slavich, 2023) holds that the human brain and immune system evolved to be most sensitive to social threats. According to this theory, a deficit of social safety, encompassing experiences of exclusion, threat, and unpredictable social environments, chronically activates the HPA axis (the stress hormone pathway) and the immune system, with cumulative effects on health, aging, and even reproductive success. As stated explicitly in the abstract, the theory presents evolutionary biological evidence that social safety and threat "are strongly linked to health, well-being, aging, and longevity," and structures this insight into a testable framework.
Applied to a closed Mars community, the implications are striking. A sealed habitat with no exit, role conflict, and a sense of disconnection from Earth could chronically fire social threat signals. The deeper problem is that these effects may accumulate psychologically and physiologically across generations. The stress environment endured by the first generation could alter the developmental conditions of the second, potentially undermining the long-term habitability of the settlement itself.
Bayesian Emulators: Finding Critical Variables First in High-Dimensional Space
Meanwhile, in the entirely separate field of systems biology, a methodology already exists to address this same structural problem. Bayesian Uncertainty Analysis (Vernon et al., 2016) was developed to explore complex biological models with tens to hundreds of unknown parameters efficiently, without exhaustive simulation. The centerpiece is the emulator, a surrogate model trained on a small number of strategically selected simulation runs. It can be evaluated far faster than the original model, while ranking input variables by their contribution to output variance across the entire high-dimensional parameter space through global sensitivity analysis. In other words, it identifies where to look first, before any exhaustive search is conducted. As the abstract explains, the method was designed to solve the fundamental challenge of "high-dimensional global parameter searches" in systems biology.
The Bridge: How Connecting These Two Fields Could Open the Bottleneck
Linking these two frameworks remains an unvalidated proposal, but the structural compatibility is worth noting.
Social Safety Theory provides a mechanistic map of which socio-environmental conditions threaten the biological stability of a group. The Bayesian emulator is a tool for searching that map to determine, at minimal computational cost, which of the dozens of variables most sensitively drives the output, namely indicators of group collapse.
Applying this combination to Mars habitat design raises the possibility of determining, at the emulation stage and before thousands of full simulations are run, whether role allocation structure or ritual frequency is the more critical variable for group stability. The reason these two fields have never intersected is straightforward: social psychologists do not work on parameter search problems in complex-systems models, and systems biologists do not treat Mars community psychology as a design problem.
Impact: What Could Change Once the Bottleneck Opens
If high-impact variables can be identified at the design stage, validation of the socio-environmental design of a Mars habitat could be conducted far more efficiently and with sharper focus than is possible today. More importantly, making this approach viable could change the very way researchers explore the question of how many people, living under what kind of structure, could sustain a community across generations.
